What is a crew cab vs extended cab truck and which should you get?
These days trucks are everywhere. The days where trucks were built only for work are long gone. Modern pickups can be optioned to be as opulent as the well-known names in luxury. There is a pickup truck made for you, no matter if you want the lap of luxury or require a workhorse. Once you figure out if you must have 4WD (or just Rear-Wheel Drive), the next big decision is to decide which cab type works best for you.
As the name suggests, a regular cab pickup has only one row of seats with a small amount of storage space and legroom. A regular cab used to be the one configuration available on pickups. In most regular cabs, the seats practically touch the back part of the cab. This model is the practical version of a pickup and can usually be ordered with manual windows and locks. A regular cab is a work pickup truck, not to haul your friends and family.
As one might expect, an Extended Cab (sometimes called a Double Cab pickup) is basically just a Regular Cab with extra space behind the front seating. When it was first introduced, extended cab trucks were available for purchase as 2-doors and only had small rear jump seats available. Now sometimes known as a Double Cab truck, these trucks now have a second row of small doors for access to the cargo area. Even though there are 2 rows of seats, an Extended Cab pickup wouldn’t be the best option for road trips, even though it can carry more passengers.
While maybe not as obvious as the earlier types, a Crew Cab pickup features four full-size doors and room to carry, well, your whole ‘crew.’ Crew Cab trucks are built to carry more of your stuff and-or people. In some circles, these kinds of pickups have replaced the bland 4-door sedan as the family vehicle. A Crew Cab truck’s bigger size and powerful engine choices are unmatched in the sedan segment while still providing the passenger legroom and comfort that families desire.
