Whether it’s your car battery or something else, you should have the problem diagnosed and repaired ASAP. If the car battery is not the reason for your flickering car lights, you might be dealing with a failing light bulb or a bad fuse. Dead bulbs are an easy fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new energy-efficient LED bulbs.
If it’s a blown fuse, you may be dealing with a larger problem since fuses are a safety feature on your vehicle. In most cases, a fuse only fails when there is excess electricity flowing through it. As an example, if the anti-lock brakes are connected to a 10amp fuse, and the fuse gets more than 10amps of electricity, the fuse will fail. In this example, your anti-lock brakes would fail due to the blown fuse. If there’s a fuse that continues to fail, bring it in so we can thoroughly diagnose the bigger, potentially more dangerous problem.
Flickering lights can also be one of the signs your alternator is dying. Consider this, you start your car with battery power, but the alternator provides the power when running. If you drive an old vehicle with halogen headlights, you may notice them get dimmer with a dying alternator. On newer cars with LED or HID lights, they may flicker on and off or just stop working altogether.
A bad light switch, whether it’s the interior dimmer or the headlight switch knob, also needs to be considered if you have flickering lights on your car. In some uncommon situations, just replacing a worn-out switch could solve the flickering light issue, especially in vehicles with excessive wear or older vehicles. If your car doesn’t fall into either category, there’s a chance it could be symptoms of a bigger problem with the electrical system.
